The Office of Instructional Technology (OIT) is considering a partnership with the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) to offer an Ed Leadership and Technology Advanced Diploma which leads to School Building Leadership and Ed Tech Specialist certification. The program will provide a job-embedded experience for educators dedicated to advancing technology to enrich the learning environments for all students to be successful in school. The program addresses the current research and best practices for an effective 21st century learning environment. Tuition for the 2009 cohort will be discounted for to $830 per 3-credit course (regular tuition rates are $735 per credit). The program consists of ten, 3-credit courses and a 15-week, school-based internship.

Requirements for admission to the program include a master's degree in any content area, NYS professional or permanent certification, three years teaching experience, and letter of recommendation from your building principal and another administrator. Hello,
Is there any way to carry over credits from the MSIT degree to this certificate? I have already passed the CST for the Educational Technology Specialist license, and this semester I will finish the 30 credits toward the MSIT subsidized by the UFT. I have had to put off the last 6 credits toward the MSIT because we just can't afford the full tuition payments right now. I already have an MS in PreK-6 education, and a Permanent Certificate in Common Branches. Somehow, it's hard to think about borrowing $5,000 or more when an administrative certificate would be much more useful to me as a technology coordinator. I wish this program had been available a few years ago.

Mary,
Any credits applied to one graduate program cannot be applied to another. Sorry we didn't have the program earlier when you started, but the courses are very different focused on administration, not classroom level tech integration. hope this helps.

I am interested in the program. Although I understand that the classes are going to require some sacrifice of time. I am not sure that I can attend until I know the time and days. For example, I teach an SAT math class on Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn at 3 pm. In addition, there are some days during the week when I teach an after school program.

We try to find times that are more convenient for all students. We sometimes have Saturday morning classes but not necessarily. The criteria for scheduling is when space is available, when instructors are available, and when students are available in that order. We hope you consider joining and let us know your preferences.

I am also in the difficult position of almost finishing an administrative program sponsored by the College of St. Rose and CITE. This program would meet my needs far better. Will it be possible to transfer the work from the CITE program and finish with NYIT? Please let me know. What about licensing? NYS now requires a test for Building Leader/Administrator license - is that required with this program as well? Please respond. Thank you.

NYIT can accept 6 transfer credits from another institution. Therefore if you are almost finished at CITE you may loose some credits by transferring to this program. You are correct in that NYSED requires a test for the SBL certification. It is new this year is required for all candidates for the certification.
